As a 5 year old we had family walks from our house beside the railway line which now forms the Camel Trail. China clay trains were slow and infrequent so walking on the line in summer meant the heady smell of the tar soaked sleepers filled your nostrils and stored up memories.
Here a dry summer in Cornwall reveals the river bed of the River Camel. Beyond the weir and along the Camel trail the river splits and an island forms in the middle. The smell of the bitumen has gone but the memories of this beautiful woodland walk last a lifetime.
